The Osage, some of the more friendly Indians encountered by early explorers, were receptive to new settlers. The Osage chief even requested a school from government leaders in Washington. As a result, a Protestant mission was established in 1821 in southeastern Bates County.
John C. Kennett was the first to settle in what became Butler. He started a store and sold to "forty-niners" heading west to California.

The town was laid out in 1852 and named for William O. Butler of Kentucky. The town later became known as where the Civil War began. Under the controversial "Order No. 11," Butler and Bates County became a burned wilderness.
Butler was rebuilt and organized in 1889. On December 6, 1881, Butler became known as the "electric city" when it became the first city in Missouri to have electric lights. St Louis followed Butler's lead shortly after.

Our area enjoys a continental climate with moderate precipitation. Summers can be very humid with moist air riding up from the Gulf of Mexico. The average high temperature reaches about 90 degrees in July. Winters vary from mild days to bitterly cold. The
average low temperature is 21 degrees in January. The yearly total average rainfall is 35.5 inches.
Butler is proud of its million dollar Bates County Museum of Pioneer History complex. Located in the old 1893 jail building, it houses treasures of our great pioneer heritage and includes the nearby Atkeson Cabin, the Hastin building/blacksmith shop and the Stagecoach Depot.
Local events include the Huckster Day Fall Festival on Butler's downtown square and the Bates County Beef-A-Thon.
The Butler R-V School district's motto and underlying philosophy is "First the Child." The Butler R-V School is fully accredited. Average student-teacher ratios in the elementary school are 22 to 1 and 17 to 1 in the junior-senior high school. Longview Community College provides evening classes on the Butler R-V campus.
The Bates County Health Center is the first in the county to offer Medicare licensed home health and hospice care. The Bates County Health Center Home Health Agency provides the highest quality of care to homebound patients in their homes under the direction of their physician. Bates County Memorial Hospital is a licensed 60-bed facility.
A variety of recreational opportunities can be found in Bates County on the Marais des Cygnes and South Grand rivers. You'll also enjoy Butler City Lake, Harmony Mission Lake, Horseshoe Lake, Bagley Lake,
